I love designing homes in Surrey. The zoning allows for a lot of creativity and flexibility, giving us the opportunity to create functional floor plans and layouts that translate into stunning exteriors.
Even design-controlled subdivisions are changing. Areas that once seemed destined for cookie-cutter, copy/paste/flip designs are starting to evolve. Today’s design consultants are adapting their guidelines and design control studies to keep pace with changing trends in custom home design—and honestly, it’s refreshing to see.
One area where Surrey really stands out is multigenerational home design. Many of my clients have three, and sometimes even four, generations of family living under one roof. I approach these homes as if I were designing them for my own family. Everyone needs their own space and privacy, but the home still needs to function as one connected household. Privacy and synergy, all under one roof.
Then we have Surrey's ALR and agricultural properties, which bring a completely different design challenge. Agricultural land has limits on house size—and while I understand the reasoning behind those limits, they can make things interesting when you genuinely have three generations of a farming family trying to live within approximately 5,400 sq. ft.
That's when every square foot matters.
Basically, we're squeezing the orange to get every last drop of juice...and then we're squeezing the peel, the seeds and probably the stem too.
But that's part of the challenge, and I enjoy it. A well-designed home isn't simply about making it bigger. It's about making the available space work harder, improving flow, creating privacy where it's needed, and making sure the finished home still has the presence and curb appeal my clients are looking for.
